What does Vegetable Tanning mean?
Throughout the site you will see that the hand made purses and bags have the words vegetable tanned leather.
What does this mean?
Well upon research this is what we found out.
First, it's the small business that use this. Not the huge factories but the items made by our skilled crafts-persons throughout the site.
Apparently vegetable tanning is :" tanned using tannins and other ingredients found in different vegetable matter, such as tree bark prepared in bark mills, wood, leaves, fruits, and roots. It is supple and brown in color, with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the color of the skin"
Vegetable tanning is still nowadays the most traditional and the most recognizable. It was created by craftsmen with a historic and valuable knowledge which is why the bags are so unique. This process allows them to give leather their unique characteristics. The Italian Leather Bags and the Made in Greece bags are all using vegetable tanning for their products.
That's why none of the bags or jewelry will look exactly alike as we have noted HERE. Every piece is unique - which is how it should be.
Even better news :"... does not have harmful chemicals" Or" no animal is killed for its skin"
So there you have it. From Europe. Hand Made. Real Leather. Vegetable Tanning!
